Let's Talk: Getting Through Grief


Last week was rough.
Day by day it seem like more and more violence was happening for senseless reasons. To say people were outrage would be an understatement. Rightfully so. The consent trend of police brutality and violence has gone too far. It should have never gotten this far to begin with. With so much hate in the world, sometimes it's hard to stay positive. Well, I thought I would share some insights on how to get through the grief of negativity. 
The first thing is knowing that even though it seems pretty divided right now, there are still many people united. Reaching out to a friend, family member or even a close colleague to talk out your feelings can be a first great start. It's never good to hold in your feelings or emotions, doing that can only make things worst. Even if you're not comfortable with talking to anyone about your feelings, write in a journal just to release some anxiety.

Face the problem head on. 
It's time to have that conversation about racism and the damaging ideology it has left in the minds of many people leading to these heinous crimes committed against African-American men & woman.  There is no point in not speaking out or coming into realization that there is a big problem with the power of police brutality and the fear it has left in the black community. Be sure to speak out in your own time but at least come to the conculsion that there is a serious problem that need to be fix. 

Be sure to look after your physical health. 
I know this is a very scary situation to have to think about but please don't let this take over your thoughts. I know it's a hard thing to do but it's not good to obsess over the deaths that have been happening. Take some time off. Put down the phone, get off the computer, stop watching the news. Just take a walk, listen to music or do anything to get your mind off everything for some time. 

Lastly, don't let anyone tell you how to feel.
Don't try to control your feelings. If you need to cry then do so. If you need to yell, scream as loud as possible. Let out all of your anger, sadness and every other emotion you may have in a productive way. Once again, it's never okay to try and hold in your feelings just to make others comfortable. It's okay to completely shut down for a bit but don't let it become a habit. 

One more piece of advice. Stay positive. 
I know, how can I say that at a time like this? But I'm serious. Being positive can help any situation and help you think with a clearer mind. In nature, the sunflower moves itself in the most direct position in front of the sun so it can get the maximum sun rays. Just like the sunflower, we must follow our belief system as the sunflower moves to face the life-giving rays of the sun. At the end of every dark tunnel is the light. We will get to the light sooner then you think
